Rules for NAF Tournaments 2022

At long last, the results of the annual review have arrived. The new documents are up at:

https://www.thenaf.net/tournaments/nafdocs/

The process was delayed a bit as we waited for the biannual FAQ from Games Workshop. As GW will continue to publish these clarifications in November, a December release for the NAF review is likely to become a fixture. (As the NAF staff was working on a short schedule, it is 100% possible there will be errors or broken links in the documents. If so, please message us or comment below.)

Takeaways and related notes:

  • Generally speaking, there are few changes to the sanctioning procedure and requirements. The review process suggested that organizers already have enough tools to operate within the current meta.
  • The only true exception is that organizers are now formally allowed to change the “too many players on the field” rule from BB20. Feedback suggested it was too harsh for a tournament environment, though organizers can of course still use the official ruling from GW.
  • -As GW is publishing its own FAQs and responding to coaches’ concerns, the NAF will not host its own set of clarifications.
  • Daemons of Khorne will no longer be recognized by the NAF for standard Blood Bowl and related variants, and as such new Khorne will become mandatory on January 1, 2022. (Daemons of Khorne will still be used in the Classic variant.)
  • We have some small but fairly exciting (if you’re a NAF fanatic, at least) changes to the tournament listing and submissions pages that should be in place by year’s end. These are simple quality-of-life upgrades, but we hope they will be helpful.
  • The Tournament Series program will remain suspended for 2022, as the pandemic continues to disrupt scheduling. The NAF remains committed to resurrecting this program in the future, and organizers are encouraged to continue running tournament series on their own if the local climate allows for it.
  • Alexander “Stimme” Weiss has been named Assistant Tournament Director and will be managing the approvals process and staff. Alex was a huge help to the TD during this review process and we expect great things from him.

Thanks to all of the NAF staffers that participated in the review, and special thanks to Oli “raveen” Monk for producing the documents on a short schedule.

  1. Can we run a Sevens tournament and ban Leader?

Under the old NAF Sevens rules (still here on the site) that’s recommended. There’s no mention of doing so in the Death Zone rules from GW. So am I still ok to ban Leader as part of the rules pack, or will that now be a problem for sanctioning?
